Our Approach

RESEARCH & EDUCATION
CAPACITY BUILDING
EMERGENCY RESPONSE
DISASTER RECOVERY
Our approach to our work is a very comprehensive and thoughtful one. We do focus on Medical / Public Health and Technical Rescue but our foundation is on community resilience and civil contingencies activities.

We have an inherent desire to help people especially during displaced and highly challenging times.

Our specialty is medical and rescue response.  ERTSAR deploys all over the world in response to disasters and emergencies such as earthquakes and major floods.  Most of these deployments are immediately following a life threatening incident, in the response phase of the disaster management cycle.

The first response is usually our assessment and coordination. The team may also deploy to non-emergency missions.

These type of deployments are sometimes conducted for “Indirect Impact”, i.e. to assess and coordinate efforts, perform supportive training, sustainable capacity building, local and environmental community development, children’s and vulnerable people and family development, resilience, (community based) disaster risk reduction (CBDRM), post-disaster recovery follow-up and rebuilding. In all of our deployments we have a strong focus on the medical aspect of the response.

To deploy internationally, team members must first train to a high level in a number of technical rescue disciplines, have an understanding and ability to work within the disaster management framework (such as UNDAC, OCHA, OSOCC, etc) and complete advanced on-going training. ERT SAR does not usually recruit to the "international squads." Applicants and members must first be a capable national asset before being on the International Disaster Response Teams.

Fundamentally there is a lot of research, study, education and assessment before and during any operational missions. This is therefore an ongoing staple of our philosophy and approach. Solid regular training, education and practise.

ERT SAR works in all phases of disasters and has always provided training and capacity building programs to communities as well as the affected populations, of disasters and emergencies. This area of technical support is continually growing to support the local and global needs of the affected people which does not just alleviate their pain and suffering at the time but also serves to prevent or reduce the impact of hazards and disasters. ERT SAR has 10 main concurrent focus initiatives which are non-exclusionary and complementary.
