Off Road Vehicles

As you can imagine ERTSAR needs to get to very remote locations and so we have a host of vehicles, including off road 4X4 vehicles and special training for members to be able to drive in such conditions as unstable terrain, mud and snow.
There are additional training components for our drivers who specialise in off road vehicle operations from knowing the wading depth (to go through static water by trained operators who know how) to how to safely and effectively use a tow winch.

Some Off Road Driving theory and tips
  • Beware of boggy marsh and grass – you will get stuck very quickly!
  • Avoid harsh acceleration when in deep mud.
  • Keep wheels pointed forward as much as you can.
  • Be aware of ground clearance when entering ruts so as not to bottom out.
  • Let the ruts guide your steering with a firm hold on the wheel.
  • Traverse ruts diagonally, always keep three wheels in contact with the ground.
  • If not too muddy, ruts can be straddled.
  • Tyres make a BIG difference in mud.
  • Lower tyre pressures will help.
  • Check your brakes after driving in mud.
