HELICOPTER FAMILIARISATION AND TRAINING PAGE

Here's some updates and due to the Helicopter training (Helo credit) for the weekend.  (We have updated the way we teach the OTC.)

ERT SAR uses helicopters A LOT on disaster missions. This training will help prepare members with the required safety and professionalism and operational effectiveness around helicopters. We especially use Military and United Nations aircraft like Chinooks (CH-47s) MI-17s, PPuma, Merlins, Blackhawks etc but sometimes smaller EMS Assest like Eurocopters or Jet Ranger etc.

ERT SAR HELICOPTER TRAINING CREDIT FOR MEMBERS

(You need to progress through these levels - which we expect most of you to do by the weekend)

1) Helicopters and ERT SAR formations (video below)

2) NFPA 1006 - Helicopter standards for Rescues (& Firefighters) video

3a) Aerial Disaster Assessments (video)

3b) Safety Video

4) Face to face practical skills (Usiually at the Police College)

5) Evaluation & Pre-Test

6) Practical Flight (In real helicopter at this OTC)

So we need to send you the videos first.

Please watch this old ERT SAR training and learn the formations, what is FOD and basic safety,

THIS IS THE FIRST VIDEO

Watch this video and then the next and reply with your answers on the two.

REMEMBER ALWAYS

1) WAIT FOR THE THUMBS UP TO APPROACH,

2) KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN LOW

3) Approach fron front / side not rear (unless Chinnook)

Ensure safety prep first.

NOW PLEASE REPLY AND ANSWER:

1) State something you learned from the first 2 min video

2) List the 2 formations demonstrated

3) What am I holding up in my left hand in the camera when the RAF Helo approached (It's green)

4) State 3 things you learned from the second video.

5) Who is the provider this Helicopter service (in the video)

6) Something that video specifically told Firefighters / Rescuers to do.

NEXT VIDEO TO START AFTER THIS SECTION

Now please watch the 3 minute video of AERIAL DISASTER ASSESSMENTS

AERIAL DISASTER ASSESSMENTS

Now please email Gary Foo at g.foo@ert-sar.com these answers.

1) What 4 ways / aircraft do we use?

2) What 6 things should we bring?

3) What else should we bring just in case?

4) Does it say we should use seatbelt / harness or Not Use?

5) Is it mandatory to land and speak to people?

SAFETY BRIEF

Please watch this basic safety briefing.

Military aircraft is similar but not quite the same.

Seatbelts are different and some military aircraft do not have commercial restraints.

Use the ones you can or clip in the tactical quick release or bungey tether / RAT Strap if appropriate.

Please note:

1. ERT SAR Assigns HELO LIAISON OFFICER(HLO) at the LZ (Landing Zone)

2. The HLO will organise the security (with others) of the LZ before arrival

3. The Team Leader / Commander will decide on team formation i.e., STACK, or WEDGE.

4. The HLO will look for the "Thumbs up" from the pilots before approaching.

5. The rotors may be running 'hot' upon arrive - secure ID tags and hats etc to prevent FOD

6. Never approach until the go ahead has been given (to the HLO)

7. Wach the top rotors and approach with 'low walk' head down. Don't walk upright.

8. Watch the rear rotors. NEVER approach from the rear (unless a Chinook / CH47 type)

9. If on a slope - approach from lower front side. Use glasses / ear plus and other PPE when needed.

10. Switch your cellphone off or to flight mode. GPS & Cameras are preferred than use of Cell phone / mobile.

Thee basics will prepare you for a safe and professional flight. In tactical operational environment you will be trained for other considerations such as night flying, FLIRs, use of PLB or ELT etc.

This is another useful video

This completes your basic Helicopter training brief.

Now you need to do your practical portion and then the military module

In the UK and Canada ERT SAR have highly skilled pilots and helicopter companies assist us in this training.

We will be going there to do the practical portions of the training.
